We have a contract. What's next?

On January 13, 2007, CSUEU ratified the Tentative Agreement (TA). The CSU Board of Trustees ratified it on January 16, 2007 via telephone conference call. The TA is our new contract, through June 30, 2009. Read the Spanish-language version of this article.

Thirty-eight percent of CSUEU members voted, with the Unit counts as follows:

  • Unit 2 - 87% "yes"
  • Unit 5 - 88% "yes"
  • Unit 7 - 83% "yes"
  • Unit 9 - 83% "yes"

GENERAL SALARY INCREASE (GSI) AND MARKET SALARY ADJUSTMENT (MSA)

CSUEU employees have already received retroactive checks effective August 2, 2006 through January 1, 2007. Checks should show a 3.324% increase (3% General Salary Increase plus a .324% Market Salary Adjustment).

SERVICE SALARY INCREASE (SSI)

Effective July 1, 2006, the Service Salary Increase (SSI) maximum, within the pay range, was raised 8.324%, providing upward movement within the salary ranges. SSIs of 1% become effective on the employee's anniversary date after 12 months of continuous employment. Anniversary dates will be re-established for employees who were not previously eligible for an SSI. Each year of the contract the SSI maximum, within the pay range, will be increased 5%, and the anticipated annual SSI salary increase will be 1%, through June 2009. Retroactive SSI checks are expected in February 2007. (The updated salary schedule can be found at http://www.calstate.edu/HRAdm/SalarySchedule/salary.aspx)

BUDGET ISSUES AND CONTINGENCY LANGUAGE FOR SALARY INCREASES IN 2007/8 and 2008/9

The Governor's proposed budget falls 1% short of the negotiated salary increases for 2007/8. State law (HEERA) requires that CSUEU and the CSU go to the Legislature and the Governor for funds that have been negotiated, and that is our next step. We are already working with the CSU to lobby for full funding. Your support is crucial to make the Legislature and the Governor understand the needs of the employees of the CSU. Together we will provide an understanding of the consequences of an under-funded system for students and the negative economic impact for the people of California. The support you provided during bargaining -- with rallies, letters, e-mails and informational picketing -- was critical and will need to continue as the Legislative budget process unfolds over the next six months.

Your bargaining team thanks you for all your efforts over the last nine months. You made it happen.

In Union,

Dennis Dillon
Vice President for Representation
