 Articles on the State Budget

At the CSU Board of Trustees meeting on October 27, 2005, faculty, staff and students got a chilling look at the future should the Governor's propositions win on November 8. With an arrogance that shocked even seasoned Chancellor's Office watchers, the Board of Trustees raised student fees another 8%, proposed that their fees increase 10% each year for the next five years, and then, with very little discussion, proceeded to raise the salaries of its highest paid executives an average of 13.7% plus higher housing and car allowances.

After receiving close to a $33,000 raise and a $20,000 increase in his housing stipend, Chico State President Paul Zingg is giving his raise back to students through two new Presidential Scholarships.

Study suggests that in the long run, it would actually save taxpayers money. California's college-age population is growing, and if the state doesn't invest more money in higher education and financial aid, it's going to have greater numbers of people in jail, living in poverty and jobless, according to a study by UC Berkeley researchers.
