This insightful May 2 Sacramento Bee editorial lambasting the CSU's policy on executive compensation echoes the same sentiments that CSU unions, including CSUEU, have been expressing for a long time. As CSUEU President Pat Gantt explains, "This editorial rings true to what staff, faculty and students see and hear every day on the campuses. If CSU trustees were to take this editorial's advice, they might find new campus presidents who have better leadership qualities and who could unify the campus community in meeting the challenges we all face. If they ignore the advice, the result will be more of the same CEO types who tend to become isolated and who are connected only to the fundraising world rather than to the working class folks who attend and work on the CSU campuses."

April 16: CSU administrators are trying to sneak a cut in grad student assistance past grad students.

March 21--The CSU Board of Trustees approved massive pay increases for CSU executives yesterday. The salary hikes go to two incoming campus presidents, including $324,500 plus housing and a $12,000 per year car allowance for the next CSU Fullerton president, Mildred GarcĂa, formerly the president at CSU Dominguez Hills, who was given a raise of $29,500 for moving from Dominguez Hills to Fullerton.

As this February 28 San Francisco Chronicle article details, the chairman of the CSU Board of Trustees was forced out Monday after Senate Republicans blocked his required reconfirmation. Herb Carter  became vulnerable last summer after the trustees approved a $400,000 salary for a newly hired campus president, 34 percent higher than his predecessor, on the same day the cash-strapped CSU raised tuition.

In a newly published report, the Legislative Analyst's Office has recommended that lawmakers reject Gov. Brown's proposed four percent per year increase in public higher education funding over the next few fiscal years. Pledging to give automatic increases presents problems, the LAO said, because other parts of the budget could suffer and lawmakers would have little discretion if one higher education system needed more money than another. Read details in this February 8 Sacramento Bee article.
