December 7: BU 2 Bargaining Update

CSUEU and CSU have reached agreement on implementation of LVN II, phlebotomist and ortho tech classifications.

On December 3, 2009, the Bargaining Unit 2 council reached an agreement with the CSU on the implementation of three new classifications: LVN II, Phlebotomist and Ortho Tech. We had previously agreed on the standards for these new classifications.

The new classifications will be implemented starting February 1, 2010. Until then, incumbents performing the work of one of the new classifications should make sure that their position descriptions are current.

If a description needs updating, the employee should work with his or her appropriate administrator to update it. The administrator will make an initial recommendation of the appropriate classification for the employee, and Human Resources will then review the recommendation, pursuant to the provision set out in Article 9 of the contract. Any appeals of the classification decision shall be made in accordance with Article 9.

“There are many advantages to this agreement on both sides, including a new, higher salary range for affected BU 2 members. The majority of employees who are going into new classifications will be receiving at least a five percent salary increase,” explains BU 2 Chair Tessy Reese. “Just as importantly, LVN II workers in particular now have another step in their career ladder to help them enhance their skills.”

Employees in "in-lieu" classifications who are reclassified to one of the new classifications will receive at least a 5 percent pay increase, as long as the salary range maximum of the new classification is at least 2.5 percent higher than the salary range maximum of the employee's current classification.

Permanent employees who are reclassified into one of the new classifications will not need to serve a new probationary period. Probationary employees shall receive credit toward permanency. Seniority points for incumbents in in-lieu classifications shall be transferred to the new classifications.

CSUEU and CSU also agreed to increase the spread between the minimum and maximum salary rates from 50 to 60 percent. Salary scales are being developed and will be available later this week.

CSUEU and CSU also agreed to update the classification standards of Health Information Technician (previously Health Records Technician), Health Education Assistant, Health Educator, Licensed Vocational Nurse I, Registered Nurse I, Registered Nurse II, Registered Nurse III, Radiologic Technologist I, Radiologic Technologist II, Registered Dietitian (previously Nutritionist), Physical Therapist I, Physical Therapist II, and Speech Pathologist.

Next up on the list of classifications to review in BU 2 are Dental Assistant, Dental Hygienist and Optometrist.
