CSUEU Response to the Governor's Proposed Budget
CSUEU President Pat Gantt offers his perspective on the governor's proposed 2010-11 state budget, which was unveiled on the morning of January 8.
A review of the governor’s budget indicates a restoration of approximately $305 million to the CSU budget. The CSUEU will be in discussions with staff members at the CSU chancellor’s office as they review the proposed state budget’s details and impacts.
This proposed restoration of $305 million is certainly a better starting point than last year, boding much better for the CSU than for many other state agencies. But the budget process is a long one; in previous years, we have seen such scenarios as $80 million being cut from the CSU budget in the very final draft of the budget act and quickly signed by the Governor.
Our goal now is to continue to make the case to fund the CSU, to ensure that the $305 million is retained through the bill's final draft, and to prepare to engage the CSU in serious discussions about the budget impacts for next year. We also must recognize that the governor’s proposed state budget attacks many of our brothers and sisters in other unions and may also threaten our pension system.
