CSUEU Statement on Gov. Brown's May Revise

On Monday, May 16, Gov. Jerry Brown released his revised budget proposal for the 2011/12 fiscal year. He outlined his plan to place $6.6 billion in revenues in a ballot measure “as soon as possible.”

When asked what he would do if he doesn’t get the Republican votes needed to allow California voters to make a choice about revenues, he said he “did not want to outline a roadmap to destruction for Republicans.”

The CSU has already been cut by a staggering $500 million in 2011/12. The May revision contains no new cuts, but, if the additional revenues are not approved by the voters of California or passed by the legislature, the CSU will be facing an additional $500 million dollar cut—an amount equal to the combined budgets of the ten smallest campuses in the system. That would permanently harm the mission of the CSU and its ability to serve students and the state of California.

“We implore two-thirds of the legislature to pass a budget with tax extensions,” stated CSUEU President Pat Gantt. “The citizens of California have been asked to do more with less. They have made clear that they are willing to step up to help California retain its status as one of the greatest states in the nation. The legislature needs to do the right thing and pass a budget with a balanced approach that includes tax extensions.”
