On May 19, the CSUEU bargaining team finished three days of contract negotiations with representatives of the CSU at the Sacramento State campus. This followed three days of sessions at Cal State Los Angeles two weeks ago.
CSUEU presented proposals on the following contract sections:
- Article 10, Employee Evaluations
- Article 23, Health and Safety
- Article 27, Labor Management Committees
CSUEU also countered the CSU’s proposal on Article 7, Grievance Procedure.
A highlight was a represented employee’s gripping testimony on Wednesday to both bargaining teams about workplace bullying he has long endured. His statements, along with those of a local steward discussing bullying she has seen at the Sacramento campus, were in support of the Article 23 language that your bargaining team presented during these sessions addressing bullying and workload.
There was a lively chapter picnic for the bargaining team on Wednesday at noon, featuring talks by CSUEU President Pat Gantt and Cortez Quinn, a staffer from Assemblymember Roger Dickenson’s office. Both emphasized the need to support the extension of revenues in the next state budget. If those extensions aren’t passed, the financial background against which further CSUEU/CSU contract negotiations are held will be even more grim than they already are, as there will likely be another $500 million in cuts--this in addition to the $500 million in cuts that already took place this spring.
“Negotiating a contract is a very challenging and tedious process,” said Russell Kilday-Hicks, VP for Representation and chair of the bargaining team. ”We’re fortunate to have a talented and cohesive bargaining team. The Sacramento chapter’s great support helped make these three days very productive.”
The team is headed to San Diego June 7-9 for the next bargaining sessions.
