Legislature approves $150 million in cuts to the CSU

The budget also contains a “trigger” that could create an additional $100 million in cuts if state revenues fall short of expectations.

“Without Republican votes, the two-thirds vote required for tax extensions could not be achieved.  This lead to a budget with deeper cuts. Access to higher education drives the economic engine of our great state and is the path to a brighter future for all Californians,” said Pat Gantt, California State University Employees Union President.

“We are analyzing the final budget language and waiting to see if Governor Brown signs it in total or uses his “blue pencil” to delete any provisions.  We will continue to keep you apprised as the process plays out.”

Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. issued the following statement tonight on the state budget:

“Democrats in the California State Legislature made tough choices and delivered an honest, balanced and on-time budget that contains painful cuts and brings government closer to the people through an historic realignment.

Putting our state on a sound and sustainable fiscal footing still requires much work, but we have now taken a huge step forward.”
