Governor Schwarzenegger's State of the State address, delivered on the morning of January 6, acknowledged the need for higher education support while threatening an overhaul of the current pension system, as this Sacramento Bee article outlines.

"His message on the state pension system is a signal that public pensions will be under attack and that we must prepare for a fight on the pensions front in the months to come."

Assemblymember Noreen Evans' December 18 blog entry details California's dramatically high bond debt, a difficult situation made worse by this sobering fact: experts estimate that needed repairs and improvements to California’s infrastructure—roads, schools, hospitals, parks, and levees—will total up to $400 billion over the next 20 years.

And those options are few, according to this December 20 Sacramento Bee analysis, which provides a forecast of the governor's 2010-11 state budget, tentatively set to be announced on January 8. In the meantime, join the E-March on the governor to make sure that Gov. Schwarzenegger keeps full CSU funding in mind as he develops his proposed budget.

L.A. Times columnist and San Jose State grad Steve Lopez answers that question in this scathing December 6 essay on the short-sighted nature of budget cuts across the CSU system.

On December 3, the State Auditor’s Office published an investigative report detailing more than $152,000 in improper expense reimbursements made by the Chancellor’s Office to a former high-level CSU official. “Accountability of our public servants is increasingly important as tax dollars become more precious,” commented CSUEU President Pat Gantt. “Thanks to a whistleblower’s courage, today’s report draws back the curtain on wasteful spending at the CSU. We call on CSU management to provide transparency in its operations as we move forward into the difficult next year of CSU budget planning.”
