The California State Legislature approved $150 million in funding cuts to the California State University in the state budget bill adopted last night. These cuts come on top of $500 million in cuts enacted in March.

As outlined in this June 9 Salon.com article, the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems has just published the most comprehensive study to date addressing retirement issues for the public sector. It found that, although media coverage has focused on a handful of troubled funds, most funds are managed responsibly and maintain strong funding levels. As Salon.com puts it, "Judging the financial prospects of a pension fund in the middle of a historic economic crash is a dumb thing to do. As the economy improves, so too will fund performance." As this May 26 Labor Notes article explains, a Wisconsin judge has ruled that a bill undermining public employee unions in the state was passed illegally. According to the judge, State Republicans pushed the bill through on March 9 without necessary advance public notice. The decision invalidates the bill and will be appealed to the state Supreme Court, which will hear arguments June 6 whether to consider the appeal.
