New PPIC Poll Shows Ballot Measures Are Trailing Badly
A new poll from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) released Friday added to the recent public opinion research predicting the demise of five of the six propositions on the May 19 ballot.
According to PPIC’s research, of the six measures placed on the May 19 ballot as part of the budget agreement between Gov. Schwarzenegger and legislative leaders, only Proposition 1F – which seeks to limit legislative pay – has the support of a majority of likely voters.
View the poll.
Prop 1A in particular has drawn the ire of the majority of likely voters and is trailing by a margin of 52% “No” to 35% “Yes,” with 13% still undecided.
Even those in favor of Prop 1A doubted the measure’s ability to help avoid future budget deficits. Just 7 percent believe Prop 1A would be very effective in avoiding future budget deficits, and 32 percent believe it would be somewhat effective.
The Poll also demonstrated that, while California’s likely voters feel optimistic about the ability of President Obama and Congress to resolve the nation’s current economic problems, they have little confidence in California’s leaders to do the same.
What Arnold Means by “Reform”: Another Power Grab
Everyone knows our budget system is broken, and California is broke -- again. But Prop 1A does nothing to solve these budget problems and makes them worse in the future. Prop 1A is just another power grab from the Governor. Read more from the Vote No on 1A web site.

Former State Treasurer Urges No on Prop. 1A
In this April 28 opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times, former California State Treasurer Phil Angelides points out that Prop. 1A is a false promise that does nothing to solve the state's structural budget deficit. In fact, he asserts, the measure would actually deepen California's budget woes.
New TV Ad
The No on Prop. 1A campaign, a coalition of teachers, faculty, nurses, health care providers, seniors and public employees, today launched its first television ad, urging voters to read the fine print of the flawed and risky constitutional amendment for themselves.
Here’s the ad’s script:
Dennis Smith, Accounting Professor, Sacramento City College:
As an accounting professor, I teach my students to look at the fine print. So when the politicians behind our budget mess wrote Prop 1A, I read it closely. Turns out, their so-called “rainy day” fund includes a “Supplemental Account,” a loophole that lets them spend billions on pork barrel projects outside the regular budget. And, for all their talk about crisis, 1A won't kick in for two years.
Narrator:
Read the fine print for yourself at www.voterguide.sos.ca.gov .
Professor Smith:
