California is once again struck by massive wildfires affecting thousands of families and ravaging tens of thousands of acres on both ends of the state.
The extent of the destruction is unbelievable and heartbreaking for these families, but the added loss of life reported is devastating.
The SEIU Disaster Relief Fund (www.seiuca.org/disaster-relief) is currently accepting donations and applications for relief. Please consider making a donation so we can help our brothers and sisters during these trying times.
As of Friday, three CSU campuses are closed due to poor air quality. In the north, the Camp Fire in Butte County has forced the closure of Sonoma and Chico campuses. Meanwhile, Channel Islands in Southern California was evacuated on Thursday, as a result of the Hill Fire.
In challenging times such as these, it is important that CSUEU members know we are there for each other. The following are messages from CSUEU Board of Directors whose campuses, and communities, are directly impacted:
"A great number of our people who survived the Sonoma fires last year are having a difficult time, with not only the air quality, but also in some cases with PTSD. I would urge everyone to stay strong, and to take care of yourselves, and reach out for help if needed." - Gina Voight, CSU Sonoma
"CSUEU Chapter 302 is heartbroken. We have multiple members who have lost their homes and only have the clothes they were wearing when they left for work on Thursday morning. What we are doing now is offering what support we can, in any way we can. I want to thank those of you who have opened your homes, provided a shoulder to cry on, and have done whatever was needed to help our Union family. There will be more information to come as we hear more from those affected." -Jessica Westbay, CSU Chico
"Five years ago the Springs Fire forced us to evacuate from the campus and our homes. It's hard for us all to imagine that we are going through this again. The Thomas Fire affected all of us last year and we made it through. We are CI-CSUEU strong and we will get through this and be there for each other and our families." - Catherine Hutchinson, CSUEU VP for Finance, Channel Islands
Our Union will be there for those in need. In the meantime, please keep our CSUEU brothers and sisters in your thoughts until these terrible fires are contained.
