Lobby Day 2019 was a two-day explosion of energy and commitment as members from the CSU Employees Union and friends from the Academic Professionals of California (APC) once again joined hands to speak directly to state legislators. This year, a singular message was heard on every floor of the Capitol: #StepItUp for #AB369 because #23YearsIsLongEnough. “CSU Support Staff have endured 23 years of not moving through the salary range and it is time to correct the unfairness. Having our members unite annually to have our voices heard as one is important to continue to build relationships with our elected officials. We thank SEIU State Council and Teamsters, who are co-sponsors of this bill, for standing strong with us.” said Vicky McLeod, CSUEU Legislative Committee Chair. The CSUEU Legislative Committee secured face-time appointments with legislators or aides representing *all* 120 districts to advocate for our Steps Bill AB369. A special appearance by author Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber, shared with participants: “There’s one thing I’ve had difficulty with in my life is observing injustice and being quiet about it. I know what it’s like to be training or supervising those who make more than you. I understand your pain and frustration. So, we are still fighting this battle. You have shown me the spirit of tenacity and perseverance and that’s extremely important.” “Lobby Day was awesome. Our presence and involvement is so important. Overall I think our message was well-received and hopefully we changed some minds and AB 369 will become law,” said Jena Lords, Department Coordinator for Criminal Justice Dept. at CSU Bakersfield. The bill has bipartisan support, such as Assemblymember Jim Patterson, (AD-23, Fresno), who spoke passionately about a 23-year injustice committed by the CSU when it penalizes employee loyalty and service. We’d like to have those that represent us respond to our needs. It is time to make sure that the steps salary provisions are in place.” Keynote speaker and first woman Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, reiterated one of her priorities remains higher education and ensuring that the CSU is an institution where students and employees can thrive.
