BARGAINING UPDATE #2 - February 24, 2014

Bargaining for the Next Contract Begins

The CSUEU and CSU management bargaining teams met February 18 through 20 for the first negotiations for the next CSUEU/CSU contract. The current contract expires on June 30.

The teams are just starting to work their way through the many proposals that were sunshined last month. CSUEU’s proposals were based on the results of the recent member survey, which played an important role in determining priorities. Key concerns emerging from the survey were salaries and salary structures (Article 20), which were referenced in these preliminary meetings and are scheduled to be the subject of in-depth discussions in future sessions.

During the three-day session, we discussed key concepts dealing with grievance procedures, performance evaluations, personnel files, and union rights. In addition, we passed a full proposal on Article 15 (leaves of absence with pay), with the goal of achieving parity with other CSU unions regarding sick time and related issues. For these initial talks, much of the discussion centered on updating language, such as outdated references to hard copy time sheets.

“Most of us use electronic time sheets,” VP for Representation Alisandra Brewer explains. “For now, we’re working for clarity wherever we find this type of dated language in our contract.”
Brewer, who chairs the CSUEU bargaining team, notes that the tone was cordial on both sides.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again Tuesday through Thursday, March 4-6, on the Sacramento State campus. Other bargaining dates have been scheduled through June as follows:

  • March 11-13 Office of the Chancellor
  • April 2-4 CSU East Bay
  • April 15-17 Office of the Chancellor
  • May 6-8 CSU San Jose
  • June 10-12 CSU Dominguez Hills
  • June 23-25 Office of the Chancellor

If meetings are scheduled at your campus, be on the lookout for information from your chapter identifying meeting times and locations.

Stay tuned, stay active, and fight for our future!
