Heard at the Bargaining Table

This week in collective bargainingBargaining, Management claims heavy workload is seasonal and employees have plenty of “down” time. All employees need to do is talk with their supportive Managers and they will resolve any work load issues. #CluelessCSU

Governor issues May Budget Revise

2017- 2017 May Revision

Governor Jerry Brown issued his revision of the 2017 Budget where he cut $4 million from the General funds to offset the increase granted to Cal Grants to cover the tuition increase. Cal PERS was granted an influx of $6 billion to help offset pension liabilities.

The CSU needs a more robust base funding to help serve students, and support the staff and faculty in fulfilling that mission, so base funding remaining the same was a disappointment to the union. However, the infusion of $6 billion into PERS will help stabilize our retirement fund for the next 20 years and is a sound investment for California.

It is now the Legislature's turn to see how closely they agree with the Governor and if they will add to that base. One possible target would be adding $77 million and force the CSU to reverse tuition increases. Stay tuned as the budget has to be done by June 15th.

Sonoma State to contract out Police Dispatch Services

Sonoma State insists that their priority is the safety for the Campus Community, so they want to reorganize and re-assign non-law enforcement services away from the Police Department. The removal of this integral role in campus health and safety has serious ramifications to a timely and accurate response for emergency services. Let the campus know that safety is not dispensable - contact Stephen Green, Director of Employee/Labor Relations at 707.664.3717 or greenst@sonoma.edu.

Faces of the CSUEU – Members at work

Ella from San Francisco State will be celebrating Mothers' Day with her mother and her son this coming Sunday.

“As soon as my son was old enough to connect the word "work" with tasks he'd rather not do, I understood it was my job to model for him that work is also about being responsible for one's own experience of it. I want my son to one day have the opportunity to choose work he loves, and to have an employer who appreciates what he does.”

All moms are working moms. Happy Mothers' Day to you all from the CSUEU.

From the Labor Arbitration Institute

Employers do not have to beg employees to perform. Bottom line: an order is an order. Unions should advise their members: Obey Now, Grieve Later. The exceptions to that rule are significant, but rare and only cover health and safety hazards or illegal actions.
