CSU Salary Study Begins, Online Focus Groups Planned for December

CSUEU, Teamsters 2010, and the CSU are working together with the consultant group Mercer to study the CSU salary system for non-faculty staff represented by a union.

The primary objective of the study is to correct "inversion," the result of the CSU’s longstanding practice of hiring a new employee at a higher pay rate than a senior employee even though both perform the same or very similar work. CSUEU found that as many as 60% of our members are affected by this practice.

Employees may receive an email inviting them to participate in online focus groups in early December. The focus groups will protect participants’ anonymity, and we encourage employees to engage. >> Full article

State Audits CSU and UC's Management of Federal COVID-19 Funding

A recent state audit of CSU and UC campuses found some "did not maximize available federal pandemic funds, and they prioritized students differently when awarding relief funds."

The audit looked at the UC and CSU's management of more than $4.4 billion in federal funding they received through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on campuses and students.

Nearly $3 billion of the funding went directly to the CSU’s 23 campuses. Starting this summer, CSUEU began tracking how campuses are spending this unprecedented infusion of federal money. Read our previous report.

The state audit concluded that the six UC and CSU campuses reviewed did not maximize available federal funds, nor did they distribute them to students in a consistent manner, finding a "wide variation in how campuses distributed student aid from HEERF."

Unions Endorse Jessica Martinez To Be Next Cal/OSHA Chief

Nearly two years into a pandemic, the critical need to have workplace safety and equity has never been clearer. CSUEU and SEIU affiliates in California enthusiastically support the candidacy of Jessica Martinez as the next director for Cal/OSHA, the agency charged with keeping workers safe from injury and disease.

Ms. Martinez brings to the agency two decades of expertise in worker health and safety. As the first Latina Cal/OSHA chief and the daughter of immigrant parents, she will be responsible for protecting workers as well as empowering them to speak out against unsafe working conditions.

"A strong leader in Cal/OSHA is a critical partner in fighting the unsafe conditions of exploitation, sexual assault and harassment, and other threats to our vision. We are hopeful that we will be able to work with Jessica Martinez as California’s next Cal/OSHA chief to fulfill this vision." - SEIU statement
