Marching
in the Capitol for Steps
CSUEU and Teamsters 2010
members rally on Sept. 12
|

|
|
If you have not
sent an email to Gov. Gavin Newsom, please do so now! More than 200 union members from CSUEU,
Teamsters 2010, Academic Professionals of California, United Farm
Workers, and other labor allies joined forces at the state
Capitol this week to urge the Governor to stand with CSU workers
and sign SB 410. The bill, authored by state Sen. Connie Leyva (D-Chino), would
bring wage steps back to the CSU to create a more equitable
salary structure for Support Staff.
The rally drew
legislators who champion higher-education and the workforce
that supports students' needs; among the notable speakers
were Senator
Leyva, Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber, Sacramento Mayor Pro Tem Eric Guerra,
and Lorena
Gonzalez, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the
California Labor Federation.

A delegation of
union leaders met with the Governor's staff and delivered our
very clear message: Enough is enough, CSU workers will not wait
any longer for fair pay!

Union Leaders Call on CSU Trustees to Prioritize
Investing in Frontline Staff, Not Boosting Executive Compensation
|

When the CSU Board
of Trustees met this week, they met unrelenting criticism from
students, staff and faculty who denounced recent board actions to
increase campus presidents' pay while ignoring the needs of
Support Staff.
"The CSU is
sitting on $6 billion in investments right now…you call it your
rainy day fund but it’s been raining on staff for years,"
said Jessica Westbay, CSUEU Vice President for Representation.
Thousands of your workers earn less than $25 dollars an hour,
there’s racial and gender salary disparity and salaries under
market."

 California's housing crisis has
been urgent for years. Consider this startling statistic: There
is not a single county where a worker can afford a two-bedroom
apartment at minimum wage.
"Working with
college students at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, I see up close the
toll astronomical housing prices take on education and mental
health. Students can't focus on studying for exams or writing
papers when they're worrying about where they'll sleep on a given
night. I feel deeply for these terrified students because not so
