Union Announcements

  • Steps Update:
    • Classifications have been finalized as of the end of March.
    • Starting in early May (May 5-9), HR will be communicating with staff affected with a classification change (note: many have not changed classification).
    • Next, those not affected will be notified by HOUR that their classification remains the same.
    • Stay tuned. Additional ‘next step’ information coming soon.
  • Lobby Days 2025:

Karen Malone attended Lobby Days 2025 this past week.   It is an annual spring meeting in Sacramento where selected CSUEU from each chapter (campus) stewards and e-board members lobby our state representatives IN PERSON and urge them to support CSUEU initiatives.

Initiatives (asks) stressed this year:

1.      Keep your promise to staff - The CSU promised to implement a new wage system based on state funding. The legislature must reject budget cuts and payment deferrals that jeopardize vital support services and academic programs critical to student success.

2.      Keep your promise to students - Support CSUEU Unit 15 student assistance as they negotiate their first ever contract. Student workers deserve financial security and a voice on the job as they juggle school and work while pursuing a higher Ed degree for a better future.

3.      Keep your promise to good jobs - Ensure free and fair union elections across campuses. All employees working on the CSU campus including those in nonprofit auxiliaries, foundations, and ASI deserve the right to unionize without employer interference

Additional highlights:

·       📢 **FULLY FUND THE CSU** - Keep the Promise!

o   The Governor's proposed budget cuts include 53% cuts to higher education

§  He is trying to balance the budget on the back of CSU/UC

o   The CSUEU kept its promise by brokering a deal with the CSU in getting steps in place so that ALL staff will be sufficiently paid the salary they deserve.  Now the state of California needs to keep its promise by funding the 5% compact and NOT deferring it to FY 27/28 🙁

·       👎Governor's cuts to CSU = $650 million ($400 million for CSU + $250 million in compact funding for steps)

o   We're saying, "find the cuts somewhere else"!

o   Call to ACTION for ALL represented employees!

§  If not already a member, Join CSUEU!  - Our power is in our numbers!

§  If already a member, contribute to the CSUEU PAC! – see more below.

§  Contact YOUR representatives repeatedly and urge them to FULLY FUND THE CSU!  Don’t know who YOUR REPs are?  Now you do! - Find YOUR Rep

§  Participate in our May Day (International Workers’ Day) event on Wednesday, APRIL 30th (when most of us are at the office)!  Wear your union swag and if you don’t have any, contact Julie or Karen on how to get some!

·       ✊PAC --- Political Action Committee

o   Time to get political! --- you're a state worker, so you are, by default, already tied to state politics.  Most of your work environment and pay structure is determined by the government of the State of California.

o   60% of our salaries are paid by California state (40% tuition)

o   If you're not at the table, you're on the menu --- The PAC monies help pay for our lobbyists and Lobby Days.  The only thing our PAC does is advocate for YOU, the worker.

§  The CSU contributes $1 million a year to advance their agenda

§  In contrast, the CSUEU pays $10,000 in contributions to protect the represented staff

·       Who do you think the legislature is more inclined to listen to?

·       ✊CSUEU Unit 15 - Student Assistants

o   97% of student assistants voted to join CSUEU, but CSU has not finalized a contract, delaying agreements on fair pay, sick leave, and other basic benefits.

·       ✊CSU Workers w/o union representation and benefits

o   ASI (Assoc. Students Inc) employees, auxiliaries, and Resident Assistants are seeking to unionize for better protections, but CSU employers — including CSULB’s Beach Shops — have hired anti-union law firms to oppose their efforts to secure collective bargaining rights.
