Discussions Include Evaluations and Grievance Procedures
The CSUEU bargaining team met with CSU management Wednesday through Friday, April 2-4, at CSU East Bay. They conducted in-depth discussions about issues and concerns related to:
Topics included abuse of the intermittent employee, temporary employee, and emergency hire categories, along with ways to improve the performance evaluation process and to provide clarity on the vacation request process.
CSUEU hammered home the importance of management having accurate position descriptions available at the time of hire and developing subsequent updates as jobs change. Position descriptions are crucial to proper classification and to accurate performance evaluations, and they provide each employee with a clear understanding of his or her duties.
CSU proposed and CSUEU countered a proposal on Article 7 (Grievance Procedure). Both sides are trying to find ways to have more meaningful grievance hearings, with the goal of reaching resolutions to disagreements as early in the process as possible.
Salaries and salary structures (Article 20) were referenced and are scheduled to be the subject of in-depth discussions in future sessions, bearing in mind that the state’s FY 2014-15 funding to the CSU will become clearer as the legislature’s budget process proceeds this spring.
CSU East Bay Chapter 306 hosted a spirited noontime rally on Thursday as part of the new “Take a Stand!” coalition, which calls on the state to restore adequate funding to the CSU budget to provide better services for students. It also calls on CSU management to take action to retain experienced employees, among other concerns. Rally signs included “Stand Up for a Fair Wage!” “Stand Up for Fairness!” and “Stand Up for Staff!”
CSUEU is now circulating a “Take and Stand!” petition to show the CSU Board of Trustees that we are serious about our concerns, and Chapter 306 gathered more than 200 signatures during the rally. The bargaining team thanks Chapter 306 for its support.
