NAME : Rocky Sanchez CAMPUS : Cal Poly Pomona JOB : Administrative Support Coordinator YEARS AT CSU : 29 I come from a union background, my father was a business agent, what we would call an LLR. Growing up I understood what a union meant and how a strong union helped workers. I have worked for academic institutions for over 40 years. The first 20 years I worked for private colleges/universities which were non-union. Because they were non-union, there were no layoff procedures; in other words there was no seniority system in place. Employees did not have the same kind of rights that a Union shop would provide. I should know since I was laid off after 14 years of employment. Union Background I started out as a Steward, then Chief Steward for my Chapter, a member at large for Bargaining Unit 7 Council. Served as a member of the Classification Committee, then as Vice Chair for Bargaining Unit 7. I was Bargaining Unit 7 Chair before becoming the VP for Representation. I bargained the last contract and now for our current contract. Our 2017-2020 contract guaranteed us 3% annual salary increases AND raised the minimum hourly rate to $15 per hour for over 700 CSUEU members. We are the first in the state to have the minimum hourly rate of $15 for state employees. • I have been an active steward since 2003 and in 2004 because the BU7 Rep for my campus. • In 2007 I became a member at large and member of the Classification Committee. I wanted to get a full understanding of how our compensation and classifications worked which is why I wanted to be part of the Committee. • In 2012 I became the Vice Chair of Bargaining Unit 7 and with that I became a member of the Bargaining Team. I believe that we can make Unit 7 stronger by the sharing of information, because information is a strength that we have not had in a long time.
