The CSUEU Bargaining Team delivered a complete package of economic proposals to the CSU during the first bargaining session this week (March 10-11) at CSU Northridge. A key element in our proposals is that the University integrate steps back into the salary scale for Support Staff. We are seeking: • New 5% salary steps in each classification. • Contract language for annual movement based on service and merit. • Adjustment of salaries for long-serving employees to reflect where they should be based on past service. On the first day of bargaining, we shared with the CSU negotiating team the history of steps at the University and the impacts on staff salaries over the past 24 years as steps were removed. Read the history on steps here . Our position is supported by facts that have been triple-checked by no less an authority than the Office of the State Auditor: CSU has the funds to provide salary steps and correct salary inversion. Members of the CSUEU Legislative Committee (Chair Vicky McLeod and Legislative Director David Balla-Hawkins) attended the first bargaining session to share with the CSU findings from a June 2019 state audit that revealed the CSU holds a budget surplus of $4 billion, of which $1.5 billion are ongoing discretionary funds that can support CSU operational costs, including salary steps. These funds were accumulated from years of employee salary savings and tuition increases. Read the fact sheets we shared with the CSU. Strong Legislative Support for CSUEU Both Gov. Gavin Newsom and Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis have publicly called on the CSU to step up and provide equity to its support staff in the 2020 contract negotiations. We have unprecedented legislative support and undisputed proof that the CSU has the funds to help lift up its employees, many of whom live from paycheck to paycheck. Most important is that contracts are won by membership support. Several hundred turned out for our kick-off rally at CSUN, and many more staged solidarity actions on individual campuses this week. See pictures here. We are also building strong alliances with the Teamsters, APC, CFA and our SEIU Sister Locals – THANK YOU SO MUCH for joining our drizzly Northridge rally!
