California faces an estimated $54 billion deficit due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, Governor Newsom has proposed that state agencies must reduce their 2020-21 budgets by 10 percent. For the CSU, this is a budget cut of nearly $400 million. As CSU employees and advocates for students, we must urge the Legislature to protect jobs, educational programs and student services. It is also unlikely that the state will receive additional federal monies to help offset state budget cuts. CSUEU members will want to ensure that the CSU documents how it spends federal and state appropriations. We are also urging that the CSU set aside funding from its billion-dollar budget surplus to protect the jobs of CSU support staff and prevent any possible furloughs or layoffs. Our voices are needed!
